At Winberry Gourds we use use our hearts and hands to create beautiful pieces of art made from Mother Earth's gift of gourds. Our works are eye-catching art pieces. We enjoy collecting the materials we use to embellish our gourds. We harvest pine needles from California to South Carolina and gather other natural products while wandering Northwest seashores and woods. Our glass beads come from nearby Arizona and California and from travels to Greece, Turkey, China, Hong Kong and beloved Bali.
Winberry is dedicated to Green Art, as we use as many water-based and non-toxic specialty paints and dyes as we can find. We also use recycled materials on our gourds. We recycle the seeds and fibers cleaned from the insides of our gourds for planting or for texture in our handmade papers. We use discarded golf club shafts for base supports in our larger pieces, and we decorate with recycled wire, leftover plastics and metals, discarded technology items, jewelry and many wonderful goodies that collect in our studio drawers from year to year.
All of our work comes from the "spirit of the gourd", because, if you will listen, any gourd will tell you what it wants to become! As a result, we select some gourds for functional bowls and baskets and others for our eclectic Women of the Earth, Ethnic Women and Spirit Women Series. Whether we are creating "Ethnic Women", "Gourd Paper Dolls" or "Earth Women", we are having fun, which is very important to the artists of Winberry Gourds! After all, we have been "out of our gourds for years!"
